Welcome
We’re excited to have you as a community organizer at Home Bass!
Home Bass is a community space and artist collective. It is held together by our keepers (Aya, Byron, and Gunny), resident artists, staff, community members—and you.
We approach community organizing in an open and free way. Home Bass is not just a space—it’s a co-creative platform where you can bring your authentic expression to life. Our focus is on education, sharing, embodying resistance, redirecting resources, and building a strong culture of connection, with a particular commitment to supporting the BIPOC community.
If your event aligns with our values (see Home Bass Core Values for a run-down), we welcome you to host: special events, music and dance sessions, art-making, educational workshops, community hangs, community parties, and more.
When you use Home Bass, you are modeling ideal community behavior. That means you are responsible for the care of the space—cleanliness, inventory, and making sure the space feels welcoming before, during, and after your event.
You are the producer of your event and hold primary responsibility for its success. Remember: relationship building is at the heart of what we do. The way you connect with your attendees and with the broader Home Bass community is just as important as the event itself.
When in doubt, our keepers, staff, and residents are here to support you.
Event Guidelines
- Start with a conversation. Start by chatting with a keeper in-person or over chat. Communications will eventually move onto IG (@homebass.oakland), so the entire team can stay in the loop, but it’s okay if we start elsewhere. You don’t need a full plan right away—we have lots of experience and are happy to co-create with you.
- Soliciting donations for your event is encouraged. You’re welcome to invite donations to support your event, but all events must remain NOTAFLOF: No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds.
- We don’t charge rent. Home Bass operates on a mutual-aid and gift-economy model. See our donation and volunteer opportunities (Donate to Home Bass and Volunteer at Home Bass) to contribute and keep the space accessible and amazing.
- Be reachable. The event producer must be contactable before, during, and after the event. Leave your number with us when submitting your Organizer Form (see section below).
- Book early. Secure your time slot with a keeper, staff member, or resident artist. Please try to book 2–4 weeks in advance. Event process and quality tends to suffer when we push things last-minute, on dancer time 😭.
- Use the spaces with care.
- Dance studio (Unit 407): Loud music and dance are welcome.
- Living room (Unit 406): Music and socializing hours are case-by-case, as people live there. There’s a projector for movie time.
- Rooftop: Music and dancing are welcome during daylight hours. The space will need to be set up for sound and generally requires some shade structure, but outlets are available. Volume must be monitored due to previous complaints from neighbors.
- Music generally wraps by 1 a.m. (hangs may continue quietly in the studio afterward).
- Set up and tear down. Allocate 30–60 minutes for setup and cleanup. The golden rule: leave the space better than you found it.
- Do not share the door code publicly. As a security precaution, we aim to limit access to confirmed guests only. In your public-facing event flyers or messaging, you can include the street address and unit number.
Home Bass, 2355 Broadway #407, Oakland, CA
Confirm the door code with the keepers/staff, and then DM them to your confirmed guests the day of your event (e.g. through Partiful’s text blast feature)
